La Vide by Aubrey Mills "He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." - Friedrich Nietzsche

Ghost Writer by RJ Jackson The opening of the song lulls the listener into a state of relaxation and false security, then almost immediately rips that ground away as the entire ensemble joins in. As the piece moves on, the listener is overwhelmed with series of ethereal sounds, solos, and hard grooves and is almost compelled to dance… as if by some "unseen" force.

Aliens Amongst Us by Jeffrey Stahmer When you are in public, have you ever wondered about some of the strangers around you? Are they just normal people or are they extraterrestrials inhabiting humanoid bodies? The behavior of some people makes you wonder if there are aliens amongst us. This piece was composed using Sibelius notation software and the resulting MIDI files were imported to Reason where the lush chords, voices, and computer sounds were designed. The song was assembled, mixed and sequenced using Logic Pro. The meter is a four beat feel layered over a five – and this ain’t your father’s 5/4.

Videogame Night by Kevin Peek The idea for this song came to me while I was enjoying a night of video games. The drum kit sounds used in the song were actually ripped and sampled from a Playstation 1 game! After creating the drum kit patch myself, I decided to follow suit with the rest of the song. All of the other sounds in the piece were made from scratch, or provided by a 37-key Yamaha Portasound PSS-140 that I found at the thrift store for $2.99.

Night Song by Michala Mesler "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." - Jesus (John 8:12)

Undersea at Night by Will Brobston This piece begins with reversed percussion recordings and whale sounds that I sampled from a vinyl page torn out of a January 1979 issue of National Geographic magazine. The song builds into a dense combination of looped guitar and sitar recordings, layered percussion, and a four-piece choir.

The End by Kevin Peek and Chris Humphries At times, the realities of life tend to toe the line between fact and fiction, making it hard to find truth. Certain events occur in life that provide moments of clarity, and “The End” is about those moments.

Experience CME In the Dark!

The Computer Music Ensemble will present In the Dark Friday April 26th and Saturday April 27th.  Both shows start at 7:30 PM and will be in the Odess Theatre of the Alys Stephens Center.  Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the ASC box office in advance, or at the door. Popular student composers and performers Will Brobston, Chris Humphries, RJ Jackson, Michala Mesler, Aubrey Mills, Kevin Peek, and Jeffrey Stahmer will present and perform all-new original works.

The "In the Dark" theme takes full advantage of the black box theatre setting and audience members will experience total darkness, performers with headlamps, electroluminescent wires, glow-in-the-dark drumsticks, glow bracelets, and an array of other special lighting effects designed by top Theatre Department student lighting designer Kevin Allinder, and Theatre Department Chair Kelly Allison.
